Orthoptists are eye therapists. They work alone and in collaborative and multidisciplinary teams to provide care for people with vision difficulties, eye discomfort and eye movement disorders. Today they are in high demand, using advanced technologies for assessment, diagnosis and non-surgical management of eye conditions.

What you’ll study

You’ll study the diagnosis and management of a variety of eye disorders in children and adults. You will develop a solid understanding of eye anatomy and physiology, ophthalmics, diagnostics, therapeutics and orthoptic clinical practice, guided by internationally acclaimed academic researchers and practitioners. 

You’ll also undertake clinical placements at a range of sites, including hospitals, private practices and rehabilitation settings, with the opportunity to experience clinical placement in international, interstate or regional areas. You’ll graduate with a comprehensive foundation in orthoptics, ready to apply for registration and begin your career.

Typical course program

The outline below shows an example program for the Master of Orthoptics based on a full-time study load. Please note that your exact program may differ based on your unique circumstances.

    core Orthoptics subjects
  1. First year

    You’ll study the anatomy of the eye and visual system, optics, binocular vision and visual perceptions. You’ll discover the pathological processes of ocular diseases and learn how to take an evidence-based approach to treatment, including eye therapy techniques.
  2. Second year

    In your final year, you’ll take on complex topics, including neuro-ophthalmic disorders and advanced orthoptic practice. You’ll learn about visual rehabilitation strategies and assistive technologies for individuals with low vision before consolidating your learning in your final clinical placements.

Course highlights

This course will expose you to the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, person-centred and evidence-based eye care across various clinical settings. You’ll have the opportunity to prepare for clinical practice and build the capabilities highly sought after by employers in diverse healthcare settings across Australia and internationally. 

Industry accreditation

This course is fully accredited by the Australian Orthoptic Board. You will graduate eligible for registration as an orthoptist, ready to launch a future in this rewarding, people-centred profession.
