What you’ll study
This degree is designed to be completed over three and a half years full-time. You’ll complete an array of core JD subjects to build vital knowledge of the Australian and international law landscape, enhancing your learning through your choice of Optional and Legal Theory units.
You’ll then complete intellectual property law subjects, allowing you to specialise your skillset in areas such as copyright law, trade mark and design laws, and intellectual property and Traditional Knowledge, shaping your learning to meet your unique areas of interest and desired career outcomes.

First year
You’ll begin your studies by completing core subjects related to your JD. You’ll learn about the foundations of law and the Australian Constitution and develop your knowledge in vital areas such as ethics, procedure and contracts. -
Second year
You’ll continue your JD studies in year two, broadening your legal knowledge in areas like administrative, property and international law. You’ll also learn about evidence, equity, trusts and civil practice. -
Third year
In your third year, you’ll finalise your core JD studies and begin to specialise your learning. You’ll commence your Intellectual Property studies, build vital professional expertise, and tailor your experience through your choice of subjects. -
Fourth year
Your final year will see you complete your remaining Intellectual Property subjects. You’ll learn vital practical capabilities like drafting patent specifications and designs law and practice, establishing yourself as a career-ready intellectual property law professional.

Industry accreditation
Students who undertake a Practical Legal Training (PLT) program, like the Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice, are eligible for admission as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of NSW.
By completing all eight accredited subjects, students can meet the knowledge requirements for registration as a Patent Attorney in Australia and New Zealand or Trade Marks Attorney in Australia with the Trans-Tasman Intellectual Property Attorneys Board (TTIPAB).
Prospective students should check with the TTIPAB for specific subjects required to be completed for registration.
