What you’ll study

With a range of delivery options, this course is designed to be completed at the time, place and pace that suits you. Within this degree, you'll complete core JD and MBA subjects, developing essential capabilities in areas like leadership, strategic management, Australian law and justice.

Having established a solid foundation, you'll then specialise your legal knowledge through your choice of Options and Legal Theory units. The Business Law stream will then allow you to complete a sub-major and enhance your learning in areas like commercial law, dispute resolution and negotiation.

First year

You will begin your program by establishing a solid fundamental knowledge of relevant areas of Business and Law through your core subject streams. You'll learn about leadership, law foundations, legal ethics, and marketing.
Second year

You'll continue your core studies, developing knowledge in areas like contract and constitutional law, financial management and economics. You'll get the chance to choose your first specialist subject, beginning the process of tailoring your degree to meet your unique outcomes.
Third year

In your third year of study, you'll continue to grow your legal expertise through exposure to relevant areas like property, administrative and international law. Your business studies will see you hone your strategic management capabilities.

This combined degree is for graduates of disciplines other than law, or those who completed legal qualifications overseas, who are looking to step into a legal career, while leveraging expertise in business to enhance career opportunities and for knowledge-building.

The Juris Doctor Master of Business Administration is both a unique offering in Australia and the ideal course to develop your capabilities in these disciplines. You will be challenged by law subjects that are both academically rigorous and practically relevant, setting you up for success in a range of legal fields, or where legal expertise is highly valued. The MBA component enriches your experience with fundamental business concepts like accounting, economics, management, and marketing, while also offering the flexibility to specialise through majors, sub-majors, or electives.

Graduating from this program means you're not just workforce-ready but are adaptable, effective, and equipped to thrive in a global legal or business landscape, or in the common real-life scenario where both intersect. This course meets all the academic requirements for admission to practise law in NSW, and Practical Legal Training, required for admission as a lawyer in NSW, can also be completed at UTS.

Students study industry informed, academically rigorous and highly practical law subjects, preparing them for a legal career or for roles in other sectors where legal expertise is of value. In the MBA, they combine the study of fundamental business concepts, such as accounting, economics, management and marketing, with a choice of major, sub-major or electives.

Upon graduation, students are effective, adaptable and ready to operate in a global legal or business environment. This course meets the academic requirements for admission to practise law in NSW. Practical legal training – the practical requirement for admission as a lawyer in NSW – can also be completed at UTS.
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

Applicants must have one of the following:
- Completed Australian doctorate, or overseas equivalent
OR
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or Australian master’s degree, or overseas equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 4.5/7
OR
- Completed Australian graduate certificate or Australian graduate diploma, or overseas equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 5/7
OR
- Completed Australian bachelor's degree or Australian master’s degree, or overseas equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 4.1/7 AND Capacity to study the course demonstrated through relevant professional experience
The qualification must be in a field of study other than law or, if the qualification is in a legal field of study, it shall not be an academic qualification for legal practice.

Applicants who have completed the UTS Master of Intellectual Property are not eligible for admission in this course.

Applicants who do not meet the criteria above should consider applying for C04264 Master of Legal Studies or C11264 Graduate Certificate in Legal Studies.

Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

For applicants who need to demonstrate capacity to pursue this course:
- Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of service in one of the following formats:
  - A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
  - A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
  - A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
  - An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
  - A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)
- Personal statement outlining relevant professional experience and reasons to pursue this course
- Relevant work-related references
For Applicants seeking credit recognition for core law subjects in overseas legal qualification
- Written assessment from the NSW Legal Profession Admissions Board (LPAB) indicating which subjects need to be completed to meet the requirements for admission as a Legal Practitioner.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

As a postgraduate student, you'll be responsible for covering your own tuition fees.

You can choose to pay your fees upfront per session, or if you’re eligible, you can defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan. This loan helps you cover all or part of your tuition fees. Keep in mind that applications for this loan are specific to each course.

Your tuition fees do not include:
- The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
- Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
- Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).
