Managers of General Teaching Spaces must ensure that risks to health and safety are adequately managed.
Students should be orientated to the space and reminded of procedures related to:
- accident and incident reporting
- first aid
- security / emergency response (watch the "Stay Safe at UTS" emergency evacuation video), and
- specific hazard information as necessary, based on the outcome of coursework risk assessments.
Responsibilities
All staff and students have a responsibility to report hazards, accidents and incidents and take remedial action as soon as is practical. Record the incident using the HIRO system (Hazard and Incident Reporting Online)
Academic staff and others using the General Teaching Space must ensure that the teaching space remains free of risks throughout the teaching activities.
Risk Management
The Manager of the teaching space should check the area for any potential hazards. In particular, items that can be easily rectified such as slip, trip and fall hazards. Examples include, power cords, chairs not pushed in, paper or other items left on the floor. The Risk Assessment Process will assist in identifying risks in the teaching space.
Students should also be reminded to report any hazards in the area and where possible, remove the hazard. For hazards that cannot be easily rectified, a HIRO report should be completed. If possible isolate the hazard to prevent injury.
At the completion of the Risk Assessment process, any risk control strategies should be communicated to students in course notes or manuals and as part of student orientation.
