Overview

UTS aims to create positive and safe social interactions. UTS recognises and respects an individual's choice to responsibly consume alcohol or to abstain.

It is expected that those who manage or participate in activities where alcohol is served do not place at risk the health, safety or wellbeing of staff, students, visitors or others, nor risk damage to property or to the reputation of the university.

There are a number of tools and resources available to staff and students planning or conducting activities where alcohol is to be served.

The university provides assistance to staff and students with concerns regarding alcohol-related issues.

Acceptable behaviour

All members of the UTS community have a duty of care to themselves and to each other and must comply at all times with the applicable UTS policies, rules and guidelines. The following documents detail expectations in relation to behaviour:

  • Code of Conduct that applies to staff and others engaged in work at UTS
  • Student Rules and the Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy that applies to students
  • Facilities Hire Policy and Campus Policy that has guidance regarding service and consumption of alcohol on campus.
  • Housing Services Handbook and House Rules as issued by the UTS Housing Service, that apply to students residing in university accommodation.

Events

Visit Event management for further requirements and details around planning events, including the responsible service and consumption of alcohol.

It is a requirement that students residing in university accommodation who plan to host social gatherings – regardless of whether alcohol is to be served – must complete an online social gathering request.

Counselling, rehabilitation and treatment

UTS provides staff and students concerned about the abuse of alcohol (by themselves or others) access to appropriate counselling, rehabilitation and treatment.

As an initial step, students concerned about their consumption of alcohol can seek counselling support or may be referred to the university's Counselling Service by staff or by fellow students.

An Employee Assistance Program including confidential counselling, coaching and support is similarly available for staff (UTS staff access only).

Supervisors concerned about alcohol or other substance abuse by members of their work group should contact their People Unit partner for assistance.

Acknowledgement of Country

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation and the Boorooberongal People of the Dharug Nation upon whose ancestral lands our campuses now stand. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
