Overview
A host organisation is a workplace controlled by another organisation that accepts UTS staff or students.
Work in host organisations may include student placements, visits or site-tours, or observational activities. It may also include visits to publicly accessible commercial environments, such as large shopping centres.
Host organisations cover all organisations that UTS does not have control of. These include
- Public and private companies
- Partners in a partnership
- Sole traders and self- employed people
- Government departments and authorities
- Associations if they have one or more employees
- Local government councils
- Independent schools
- Cooperatives
- Universities
Host organisation check
The person arranging the placement must check that the host organisation has an adequate Health and Safety Management System. To do this, request that the host organisation complete a Host Organisation Health and Safety Checklist (PDF 372 KB) .
Guidance Notes on Host Organisation Health and Safety Checklist (PDF 458 kB ) are available to assist the host organisation complete the safety checklist.
For activities where a Host Organisation Health and Safety Checklist is obtained, you may set up a Faculty Register of Approved Host Organisations (PDF 337 KB) for future reference. Host capability assessments should be reviewed annually.
Site specific inspection
On commencement of placement, a check of the work environment should be completed to ensure that it is safe.
For hazardous facilities such as laboratories and workshops, complete the Off-Campus Hazardous Facilities Health and Safety Checklist.
For office environments, complete the Off-Campus Office Health and Safety Checklist.
Any hazardous situations identified should be raised with the host organisation.
