Overview

This type of hazardous waste covers human and animal material which has the potential to cause a microbiological or pathological hazard to health e.g. biological extracts, biological tissues, materials contaminated with biological waste, animal waste and sharps.

Disposal of clinical and biological waste at UTS

The procedures for the disposal of clinical and biological waste at UTS are as follows:

Infectious

Infectious waste or genetically modified organism (GMO) waste is to be placed in an autoclave bag and stored in yellow UTS 120L and 240L bins until ready for transport to the autoclave room for processing.

After the autoclaving process, this waste is then to be transferred to the waste contractor's 120L or 240L yellow bins.

Unknown waste must be treated as infectious.

CytotoxinsWaste containing cytotoxins is to be bagged and placed in the waste contractor's 120L or 240L purple bins.

SharpsSharps, such as acupuncture needles, syringes, scalpel blades, broken glass, do not require autoclaving if they are in a container that complies with Australian Standard AS 4031:1992 "Non-reusable containers for the collection of sharp medical items used in health care areas".

These sharps waste containers are then disposed via the waste contractor's 120L or 240L yellow bins.

Arrangements at City campus

Transport the waste either to the Level 2, Building 7 or Level 1, Building 10 waste depot to await collection. Access to the clinical waste store at the Broadway campus is to be negotiated with the Faculty of Science Store.
Note that the yellow UTS clinical/biological waste bins must not be taken to the waste depot.

Clinical and biological waste is collected from the Broadway waste depot on a bi-weekly basis by contractors.

Arrangements at Moore Park campus

Clinical/biological (yellow bin) waste is collected from the Moore Park campus on a biannual basis and also upon request to Safety & Wellbeing. A reminder email will be sent to stakeholders in the week prior to collection.

Arrangements at AFTERS campus

Clinical/biological (yellow bin) waste is collected from the AFTERS campus as required and also upon request to Safety & Wellbeing. A reminder email will be sent to stakeholders in the week prior to collection.
