The Network Timing Lab comprises two racks containing 15 servers and a wide variety of specialised timing equipment, including:
- a reference rubidium atomic clock (Stanford Research Systems FS725)
- 2 root mounted dual constellation GPS receivers (Trimble)
- 3 Symmetricom network timing appliances, with root mounted GPS antennas
- low latency copper taps for non-invasive tapping of 1Gig Ethernet
- 2 high end packet capture cards (DAG7.5G4)
- purpose built timing distribution unit with 2 RS422 and 4 RS233 outputs carrying timing data from the GPS synchronised atomic clock, and
- /26 public IP address range with an independent firewall.
The NTC testbed is the most advanced of its type in Australia outside of industry, and one of the most capable in the world. It is able to conduct hundreds of network timing experiments concurrently with authoritative reference timing in the sub-microsecond range. It comprises 4 DELL servers with iDRAC remote configuration cards, and control nodes with the UTC testbed. A second `branch’ of the testbed is established at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, with extra equipment allowed for IoT device evaluation.
