The Industry Innovation Project runs across 14 weeks (including two weeks of study vacation) during Semester 1. Here is an idea of what the schedule for students and partners looks like during this time.
Semester break down
NOTE that elective subjects run for three weeks from 23 March to 10 April, and students will have limited time to focus on their IIP during this period (more info below).
Flexible timing | Weekly meeting between student team and industry partner. This may be at any stage of the week (as negotiated) and in any format (in-person, Zoom etc). |
Mondays | Weekly announcement via email and Canvas each Monday to remind students of the key activities for that week |
Tuesdays | Morning: Weekly tutorial session Includes a meeting with the tutor, an opportunity for peer-sharing with another student team and the option of booking in time with the subject coordinator (Alex). |
Wednesdays | Students individually work through the online Canvas module in their own time |
Thursdays | Morning: Weekly theme session Includes an overview of the week’s theme and activities. This will run for the first part of the session, with teams then moving to their own Zoom sessions to share their learnings. |
Fridays | Anytime: Students send weekly update to tutor by 5pm Includes any outputs from online activities for that week, an update on any industry partner contact and any actions arising from the Tuesday tutorial meeting. |
Elective subjects: 23 March - 10 April
Students also undertake an elective subject for a period of three weeks during their IIP subject. During this period they will have limited time to focus on the Industry Innovation Project, so you may have less contact with them during this time frame.
The elective subject will be one of the following:
Envisioning Futures
This subject invites students to explore emerging cutting-edge ideas, existing foresight practices and future scenarios. Students are challenged to explore the generative nature of innovation, inspiration and learning in the context of imagined future worlds.
This subject takes place over three intensive weeks culminating in the Envisioning Futures showcase on 9 April. This is a highlight of the FTDi calendar where each student team gets to design and construct a vision of the future in which invited industry partners, guests, staff and other students are then immersed.
Feedback from past students has been that the futuring skills they developed in the subject helped to bring a new perspective to their IIP challenges and other 4th-year subjects.
New knowledge making lab
This subject serves to open up the exciting field of transdisciplinary research to practitioners. Students explore and design diverse creative discovery processes, revealing a wide range of research possibilities. They circle these possibilities and finally settle upon an intriguing topic that they may wish to pursue. Students work closely with their cohort to uncover, probe and reveal new ideas worth exploring in the Zeitgeist and in our disciplines to identify opportunities. They continually articulate the relevance and interconnectedness of their work as they locate their passions and inquiry within the complex dynamic of a learning collective.
