This interactive project, by Jacinta Rassan is a response to one of the many stories told by Uncle Greg Simms, an Aboriginal Elder living in Western Sydney, with ancestral ties to the Gundungurra people of the Blue Mountains and the Gadigal people of the Darug nation.
This was part of the Visual Communication second year core subject Narrative, Form and Time. It represents a three-and-a-half-week sprint from zero coding experience to a fully designed and presented interactive project. The final outcome is an interactive web app, where a viewer can explore the narrative by progressing through it via a series of click based interactions.
Jacinta has taken on board the words of Uncle Greg when he speaks of his experience of gaining knowledge from his own elder’s story telling - “See you couldn’t work out what he was talking about back then, you had to wait to a certain age… A certain age to work it out, and that was the right time to find out what he was trying to say.” What we find in her interaction is a person response that is also respectful of the story tellers own voice.
The illustrations, combined with subtle animation and compelling interaction design underpin a nuanced and unique retelling of a complex narrative that is about coming of age as much is it is about the act of storytelling itself. The images presented are process work and the final project.
