The Object Library is a speculative design for an online sharing platform that allows the lending and borrowing of everyday consumer items.
We all own items that we only use once or twice a year—that $200 drill, those golf clubs that barely see the light of day. Or perhaps it’s a drill we need, and would rather avoid buying for a brief few minutes use.
The Object Library allows individuals to borrow, lend out and swap such things with neighbours, just when they need them. It also exists to reinvigorate a much lost sense of community in our highly anonymous and urbanised lives. It is a catalyst for kinship and collaboration—a tangible community hub that taps into ‘person–to–person exchanges that cannot be app’ed’
With a focus on the experience, rather than the economics, of exchange, the Object Library also seeks to reduce unnecessary consumption by maximising the use of existing objects.
