Current agricultural systems in Australia are detrimental to the environment they depend on. In his highly acclaimed book ‘Dark Emu’, Bruce Pascoe argues that reintroducing native staple foods to Australian farms could contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future. ‘Soil (not salt)’ draws from two branches of visual communication — editorial illustration and information visualisation — to visualise Pascoe’s arguments for native food production. These visualisations are designed as tools to provoke conversation; among conscious consumers, educators and policy-makers. The project contributes to a broader dialogue about innovative approaches to creating engaging communication about climate change.
