How to use Teams for your coursework at UTS.

Microsoft Teams at UTS

Download and install the Microsoft Teams app

Teams is part of the Office 365 suite. Teams allows you to:

  • Collaborate in channels and pin documents, videos, websites and more
  • Hold online meetings while presenting a PowerPoint or a whiteboard
  • Share, edit and comment on files
  • Have private or group chats and make audio or video calls

This guide sets out the basics of setting up MS Teams, and collaborating with others in channels and groups.

Are you an academic using Teams for teaching? Learn more at LX Resources

How to download Teams

Teams is available to all UTS staff and students and works best on the dedicated Teams app for your device. For the best Teams experience:

  1. Download and install the Microsoft Teams app
  2. Sign in using your UTS email (e.g. 12345678@student.uts.edu.au) and password

If you need to use the web version of Teams in your browser, use Chrome or MS Edge. Firefox, Safari and other browsers will not work with all Teams features.

How to use Teams

Once you’ve signed into Teams, you can chat with your classmates and teachers, collaborate on files and join video and audio meetings.

Follow your teacher’s instructions for collaborating on Teams. Learn how to use different Teams features with these guides:

  • Get started with Teams
  • Learn about teams and channels
  • Start a group chat in Teams
  • Use @mentions to get someone’s attention in Teams
  • Collaborate on Files in Teams
  • Participate in meetings and calls

Tips for Teams

  • Use @Mentions to get an individual or channel’s attention - but don’t overuse it! Be aware that when you @ your whole team, everyone will get a notification.
  • In channels, don’t mix up Start a conversation and Reply to a conversation - it’s easy to lose track of conversation threads this way.
  • Keep in mind that you won’t always get an immediate response to a message - like an email, your teacher may check messages at a particular time or day.

Privacy information

When using Teams, be aware that you must follow the UTS Acceptable Use of Information Technology policy, and that UTS privacy policies apply to collaboration in Teams.

View the Microsoft Privacy statement for information on how Microsoft processes Teams data.
