An exit-only course, this program is only available to students in the Bachelor of Communication (Writing and Publishing) Bachelor of International Studies who complete the International Honours pathway in their fourth year. Practically focused, this program gives you the opportunity to build language skills and cultural knowledge of your focus country before you experience it first-hand during a year of in-country study.
You’ll also learn about the contemporary publishing industry and hone your writing and editing abilities in hands-on workshops, where you’ll compile a professional portfolio that spans a wide array of genres and styles. Together, this will give you everything you need for a thrilling international career as a writer or publishing professional.

What you’ll study
This is an exit-only course, and there is no direct admission. In this program, you’ll study core Communications and International Studies subjects, developing vital competencies in both disciplines before specialising your knowledge through your Writing and Publishing major stream. Then, you’ll choose to broaden your learning with electives or pursue a second major to further enhance your expertise.
Your International Studies will give you an in-depth understanding of your country and culture of choice. You can choose from six countries: Germany, China, France, Italy, Japan, or Spain. Then, you’ll put your extensive cultural and language skills to use as you pursue your honours studies at one of our many international partner institutions.

First year
Kicking off your course, you’ll establish foundational skills in writing, editing and narrative through your core and major subjects. You’ll also study Intercultural Communication, acquiring vital knowledge to inform your international studies and exchange experience. -
Second year
This year, you’ll begin learning about your chosen country and its culture, context and customs while also building your language competencies. You’ll continue your Communications units, electing a second major or broadening your horizons through disciplinary electives. -
Third year
Your third year will see you further hone your expertise in your chosen country and language, preparing for your international exchange. You’ll also continue your second major or pursue further electives, which cover areas like advertising, news and design. -
Fourth year
Your second last year will see you engage in an exciting international adventure, where you’ll study at a partner university, immersing yourself in another culture and language. You’ll complete your honours projects under supervision from a UTS academic. -
Fifth year
You’ll round out your degree with any remaining units in your Communications stream. You’ll also undertake two capstone projects, where you’ll hone your employability and professional skills and produce an original piece of writing in your genre of choice.
Course highlights
This degree will establish your knowledge of the contemporary publishing industry in Australia and abroad and grow your practical competencies in editing, publishing and writing across genres, from screenwriting to fiction. You'll also establish acute language skills and cultural insight, which you'll enhance further through your immersive international honours program.
