Sexual harm means any unwanted or unwelcome sexual behaviour or any sexual activity that occurs without free and informed consent.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is any violence that is used against someone because of their gender (or perceived gender). Sexual harm is a form of GBV.
Sexual harm, GBV and consent are further defined in the Sexual Harm Prevention and Response Policy.
People committing these acts often use tactics to make a person feel responsible or complicit. It is never the responsibility of the person who has had the act committed against them. But it can be frightening to have the courage to reach out for help.
Some forms of sexual harm (for example, sexual assault, image-based abuse and stalking) are a crime.
What to do if you have experienced sexual harm or GBV
