Why UTS?
Wilson came to UTS on the strength of the School of Communications reputation and that the course had a strong focus on practical work, not just theory. A course highlight was the Practical Professional Advertising module, a subject where students get to work on a real client brief, then pitch their solution to them. It was more than just an assignment as it prepared him for the workforce by putting what he had learned into practice.
Diversify your skillset and stay relevant
Another aspect of the course he enjoyed was the diversity of experiences on offer. Even though he studied Public Relations, he was able to branch out and explore his interests in advertising, UX and app design. Expanding his skillset is something he continues to do in his professional career. Working in the digital marketing sector he's learned you have to constantly evolve, learn new things and change, as the sector moves at such a rapid rate.
Right now, I’m just taking the opportunities as they come and as long as I’m challenged and constantly learning, I’m happy
Graduate ‘work ready’
In his day to day job, no two days are the same. One day Wilson might be trying to crack a creative brief and the next he'll be out on a shoot for a client. He credits internships and taking the time to network key in helping him break into the industry. On a daily basis, Wilson uses core skills he learned at uni such as being able to communicate effectively, working well in a team and presenting confidently.
At Ogilvy, Wilson has been able to work on some exciting projects. A highlight was making Australia’s first ever Snapchat game for KFC - a creative solution to a business problem.
Working at an agency definitely has some glamorous perks but it’s also a great place to work on interesting projects with like-minded creative people.
