You won’t regret it – there’s so many soft skills to be learned and honed that can be used across any industry you will enter in the future.I love how hands on this degree is and how it encouraged students to get experience outside of the classroom to put theory to practice and get a feel for how the real world works.
What inspired you to study Public Communications at UTS?
I have always been interested in entering the fast-paced world of media and when I consulted my careers advisor in high school, she highly recommended UTS. She spoke highly of how UTS encourages internships and the support they give students to experience the industry they would enter in, and that is what motivated me to apply for UTS.
What is your current title and what does the role involve?
I’m currently a Sales Operations Executive at oOh!media which is a leading out of home advertising company in Australia. In my day-to-day, I am supporting the sales teams all around Australia by assisting with completing high-end proposals, post analysis reporting and booking in and optimising campaigns just to name a few tasks. Every day is bustling with new tasks and skill sets to learn which keeps me on my toes and keen to improve myself!
What practical skills have you learnt in your Public Communications degree that you have utilised in your professional life?
Pitching ideas and expressing one’s thoughts clearly and succinctly. I am not the most articulate and eloquent speaker so when I am asked for my opinion, I often have trouble getting out what I want to say. Thankfully through my degree, I was given numerous opportunities to practice my elevator pitch and public speaking. Now, I have less trouble conversing with my co-workers and it has also helped me to build a more polished image for my professional self.
How did your degree in Public Communications prepare you for your full-time role?
The degree constantly allowed me to apply my written and verbal communication skills, as well as collaboration and confidence which are very important attributes to have when entering the media industry. My current position challenges me every day and I have to constantly think on my feet and so the various internships, assessments and group work I have done throughout the course of my degree has provided me with the strong foundations needed to stay present and focused during work.
Looking back, what were some of the highlights you had studying at UTS?
I thoroughly enjoyed all the volunteering and paid job opportunities that UTS provided to its students. Being part of the orange family as a Peer Networker helping out during orientation and standing on stage speaking to a large audience as a Careers Ambassador have definitely left me with memories that I will never forget. Being a part of so many extracurricular activities outside of studying added so much more dimension and excitement into my university life which I am very grateful for.
