*The Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Journalism) is now known as the Bachelor of Communication (Journalism).
UTS encourages a type of learning that isn't always process driven - you learn the rules but then rip up the rulebook, which has given me the creativity and reasoning to overcome the challenges in my day to day job.
Enhance your degree through travel
When Isabella was looking at which university to go to there were plenty that provided the communication capstones but it was the option of combining journalism and international studies that swung in UTS's favour. It would give her the opportunity to travel and learn about different cultures and people which would enhance and complement her journalism degree.
Isabella travelled to Chile as part of her International Studies degree and whilst abroad students complete a major research project about their host country, giving her the practical skills necessary to navigate the evolving work environment.
My project was about abortion in Chile which, as a feminist, is something I feel passionate about. Having this opportunity gave me the drive to not be complacent and always look for the passion in what I do.
Learn the rules, then rip up the rulebook
The anthropological skills she gained whilst studying abroad are one of her strengths in her current role as a Digital Campaign Coordinator for the digital agency News Xtend. She manages digital advertising campaigns for small to medium businesses, which requires insight into human behaviour and how people interact online.
Starting the professional journey
Isabella is enjoying her first role in the digital marketing space as it blends her creative and strategic sides. On the one hand, she's working with clients to create a campaign that's in line with their brand and vision and on the other she's looking into campaign metrics and devising solutions on how to enhance the campaign's performance.
I'm really happy with my decision to start my career in digital marketing, it's given me the opportunity to work across marketing in a lot of different industries.
The digital marketing sector is one of the fastest growing industries with many exciting opportunities that is set to grow exponentially. Isabella's advice to students is to build on their core competencies and be open to change. Combining international studies and journalism brought a new depth to her communication skills and storytelling she wouldn’t have been able to learn in the classroom. For the future, she hopes to stay within the digital marketing space but maybe explore working for a single brand.
As technology changes, it is important that I do too but I'm learning so much and am excited for what the future holds!
