Additional funding for IDP students

Researcher development funding can be used for a course, training or activity that we don’t offer at UTS. 
 
It can be delivered in person, online, or offered as an extension to a conference program you’re participating in. 
 
However, the activity must:

• fit within at least one element of the HDR Capability Framework
• be planned and documented in your GRSP
• be approved by the Graduate Research School prior to your attendance
• be offered through a recognised professional society, MOOC or other organisation involved in the promotion of research and professional practice. 

It cannot be:

• funded by any other source (such as your employer, UTS or another grant),

OR

• used for travel and accommodation costs.  

You must provide evidence of having completed the activity. This can be a completion certificate or a written report on your learning. 

Funding is capped at $1,500AUD per candidate per research degree, and can be:

• put towards more than one activity

OR

• used for registration and training fees. 

Email the IRDP fund application form and supporting documentation to the Research Scholarships team. 

You’ll be notified of the outcome via your student email account.

Once your funding is approved, you should book and pay for the training and email a copy of the tax invoice or receipt to the Research Scholarships team for reimbursement. 

To be eligible for the IDP Student Conference Fund, you must:

• be formally enrolled at the time of the conference in the IDP (not on a leave of absence or under examination)
• have successfully completed your Stage 1 assessment
• have submitted all required Progress Reports or Review of Progress reports to date and not have received an ‘Unsatisfactory’ result
• have submitted all IDP Student Conference Fund report(s) for previously funded conference(s)
• be within your candidature period at the time of conference, 
• demonstrate relevance of the conference to your research project. 

You are not eligible if you have:

• received funding from the Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Research Student Conference Fund
• been reimbursed via other sources for the same conference. 

You’ll be allocated a maximum of $5,000AUD funding for your entire candidature. 
This funding can only be used for:

• conference registration (at student rate, if available)
• return economy airfares (lowest, non-flexible fare),
• accommodation for the duration of the conference and one night prior to the start date, if the conference is outside your home city (the lowest conference hotel rate).

Any approved funds are specifically for the conference nominated in your application and may not be used for any other conference or purpose.

You can apply for this funding without confirmation of your conference involvement. However, funds will only be issued once your confirmation has been provided. You must be approved before you attend the conference to access the funding. To apply, email the IDP Student Conference Fund Application Form and supporting documentation to the Graduate Research School via grs@uts.edu.au. 

You’ll be notified of the outcome of your funding application via your student email account. In this email, you’ll get instructions on how to access the payments. 

If you accept this funding, you must provide a written report on the conference outcomes to GRS, within two months of attendance. 

You are responsible for completing a Travel Approval Form through your faculty to be covered by UTS travel insurance. 
If you can no longer attend the conference, you must inform the Graduate Research School. In this case, you must return any funds you’ve received.  

You must submit an online report no later than two months after the conference date. This report may be made publicly available to showcase UTS student research activities. If you don’t provide a report within two months of attendance, you will be ineligible for future funding. 
 
The report should contain:

• your name, student number and faculty or institute
• conference details: name, location and date  
• abstract of your presentation,
• brief reflection (max. 400 words) on the experience and outcomes of attending and presenting at the conference and, if applicable, visiting research group.
