Course upgrade
Under certain circumstances a student enrolled for the Masters degree by thesis may apply for transfer to the Doctoral program (University Rule 11.5).
The Faculty of Science requires students to submit their application for course upgrade at the time of formal candidature assessment usually presented during the 2nd session of enrolment (for full-time students) or 3rd session of enrolment (for part-time students).
Student wishing to upgrade must read the Faculty Policy on Candidature Assessment for information on presentation of assessment seminar and written work.
The assessment seminar and timeline provided at the seminar must address the increased scope of the project.
In addition, students are required to submit their application to upgrade at least 2 weeks prior to their scheduled assessment seminar.
The application must include:
Completed Course Upgrade from Masters to Doctoral level form
A project proposal which explains how the scope of the project will be broadened to doctoral level
A timeline showing completion at doctoral level
A statement of support from the Principal Supervisor
Any other evidence of research capability – e.g. papers published or submitted for publication; draft chapters of the thesis
The application will be circulated to members of the student’s assessment panel prior to the seminar. The Panel may deem the assessment to be sufficient for the doctoral project, or require the student to present another doctoral assessment seminar after a specified period.
