Length of candidature
Research student candidature is counted in a measurement of time called “EFTSU” (Equivalent Full-time Student Unit). Universities receive Federal Government funding to cover the period of EFTSU for research degree students through the Research Training Scheme (RTS). Students have a limited amount of EFTSU to complete their degree.
Full-time PhD student = 4 EFTSU in total (4 years or 8 years part-time)
Full-time MSc student = 2 EFTSU in total (2 years or 4 years part-time)
The EFTSU clock is stopped when a student goes on a period of leave of absence. The EFTSU clock is slowed if a student changes from full-time to part-time; and it speeds up if a student changes from part-time to full-time.
If a student has reached the end of their EFTSU period and is not ready to submit their thesis for examination due to reasons beyond their control, they must apply to the Faculty for an extension of candidature.
