Sustainable development involves a broad range of often difficult balances between competing issues. Learning how to research global challenges and communicate the findings in an effective and engaging way is a critical skill for the planning professional. This project challenges students to rethink how they communicate their research to a broader audience through a non-traditional deliverable. Working in teams, students present the findings of their research through websites, infographics, videos, animations, and a variety of other media forms. To help engage students in class, students compete in ‘Speed Races’ using the Socrative app. Teams log in to the app and participate in speed quizzes to help assess retention of content presented in class. Students love this ‘game’ and it helps facilitate conversation about challenging content.
