How to host a UTS FASS intern
When are UTS FASS interns available?
The UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers students to complete internships for course-credit or as a Voluntary Internship that doesn't accumulate academic credit but still closely relates to the student's degree.
For-course-credit internships
Student who complete internships as part of an internship subject are available during the three semesters of the academic year:
- Spring Semester: August–October
- Autumn Semester: March–June
- Summer Session: December - February
If the internship is unpaid, UTS covers the student intern with insurance for up to 100 hours of unpaid internship.
Voluntary internships
Student who complete an internship outside of their course-work as a voluntary internship are available all year round and are covered by UTS insurance for up to 210 hours of unpaid internship.
Insurance
Unpaid internships
All UTS students undertaking approved unpaid internships are fully covered for Personal Accident and Public Liability insurance up to the value of $10 million.
Paid internships
In the case of paid internships it is expected that the student is entitled to the following:
- A minimum wage
- The national employment standards
- The terms of any applicable award or enterprise agreement
- Insurance through the host organisation
The insurance paperwork is administered via the UTS CareerHub Online system. All organisations hosting FASS student interns are required to register with CareerHub via the Industry Portal.
Structuring your internship
There is lots of flexibility when it comes to creating an internship opportunity for a UTS student. The type of project and the tasks you ask your intern to undertake are all up to you, subject to approval from UTS.
There are a few things we ask you to include as part of the internship experience, these include:
- The completion of internship paperwork via the UTS CareerHub system:
- Work Health & Safety Form to ensure a SAFE WORK ENVIRONMENT
- UTS Unpaid (For Course Credit) Placement Agreement
- Approval of the student’s Learning Contract
- A supervisor and mentor that the intern reports to, and who schedules work and provides mentorship throughout the internship placement.
- A suitable induction and orientation briefing on your organisation and its policies and standard operating procedures (some of this can be directed reading, such as asking students to review your organisation’s website).
- A program of activities that provides structured and meaningful learning opportunities relevant to the student's field of study and their professional learning, addressing the learning goals in the student's learning contract.
- Feedback to the student on their work and progress. In the case of an internship that is completed as part of a subject, host organisations are expected to complete a final evaluation form giving feedback on the student's professional performance.
Advertising your internship and selecting an intern
Follow our step-by-step guide to advertising your internship at UTS, and what you need to do once you’ve chosen a candidate.
-
Register: Register your organisation with UTS CareerHub. This online platform provides information on internships, jobs and other professional development opportunities for UTS students. Registration takes only a few minutes.
-
Post an internship opportunity: Once you’ve registered with CareerHub, you can list your internship, including a description of the key tasks, proposed duration of the internship and application information. UTS staff will review the information to make sure that it meets UTS guidelines.
Once your internship is approved, it will be visible to UTS students, who may apply directly to your organisation.
-
Select an intern: It’s up to you to select the applicant who’s the best fit for your role — UTS is not involved in the selection process, however our WIL Team can assist in promoting an internship opportunity advertised in CareerHub to relevant student cohorts.
In addition to the application itself, a formal interview is a good way of getting to know more about your candidates. It’s also an opportunity to introduce shortlisted candidates to your organisation. -
Complete documentation: Once you’ve chosen your preferred candidate, you’ll be asked to complete a Work Placement Agreement, Placement Summary Form and Work Safety Declaration.
Completion of these forms ensures students are undertaking appropriate placements that are relevant to their study, that the roles and responsibilities of all parties are clearly defined, and that students are appropriately insured.
