With a Bachelor of Communication at UTS, all students can complete two majors. The aim of this study program is provide a more extensive skillset, leading to a broader range of career opportunities.
There's six Communication majors to choose from:
All Communication students commence a second major but must meet the minimum GPA requirements to continue it. Students who do not meet the minimum GPA or who elect to discontinue the second major study electives instead. Find out more.

Students can select any combination of majors, with the exception of Media Arts and Production, which is not available as a second major. When it’s time to apply for your course, you’ll apply through UAC for the Bachelor of Communication of your first major. You’ll then select the second major once you’re enrolled at UTS.

Media Arts and Production + Strategic Communication
Do you imagine yourself creating ads for major brands? With a double major in Media Arts and Production and Strategic Communication, you’ll develop technical media production skills as well as an understanding of what makes a campaign successful.
When you graduate, you’ll have the option of following a production career path or more of a boardroom strategy path. Either way, your unique skill set will be a major advantage in the industry.
The combination of Media Arts and Production, and Public Communication, allowed me to learn about and develop in multiple areas that I was passionate about at the same time. Having the ability to study Advertising theory in one major, whilst developing practical video production skills in another, has allowed me to reach new and otherwise unachievable heights in both career and personal development.

Writing and Publishing + Digital and Social Media
If you love writing and storytelling, a major in Writing and Publishing is an easy choice. However, with so many publications turning digital, a second major in Digital and Social Media may give you the upper hand in your first interview.
The digital age is here and social media rules all of it. I chose to pair my Creative Writing major with a second major in Digital and Social Media to be equipped for future jobs in the growing digital industry.

Journalism + Social and Political Sciences
To be an effective journalist you need to understand society and the social, economic and global issues that shape the world we live in. A second major in Social and Political Sciences will give you the background knowledge and research skills required to succeed as a journalist.
I chose to study Social and Political Sciences to complement my studies in Journalism as it’s really important to be informed about the political, economic and historic structures our societies operate in - a journalist can’t write political stories without knowing how our democracy works, for example. I also wanted to maximise my job opportunities after graduation - now I have the option to work in either field.

Media Arts and Production + Digital and Social Media
If you have a passion for filmmaking, a major in Media Arts and Production will set the foundation for a career in the media industry. However, not all graduates go on to work in film or television. Many work as media producers for government, NGOs or corporations, creating short-form video content for web and social media. Demand for video marketing is rapidly increasing, in fact, digital video advertising spend has increased by 53% since 2016 (Smart Insights). This shift in the marketing industry means people with skills in both media production and digital marketing are high in demand.
It’s also important for freelance media producers to know how to promote their own work using digital platforms. A combination of Media Arts and Production and Digital and Social Media will give you the skills required to make multimedia content but also the ability to publish it online, with a strategy and comprehensive user experience in mind.
I always knew I wanted to explore filmmaking as a career path, and so Media Arts & Production was my first choice for the Communications degree (as this can only be chosen as a first major). I chose Digital & Social Media as my second major as it also seemed like a path from which many career options splayed, and seeing as so much of the world is going digital, I thought the skills I'd learn in Digital & Social Media could translate into whatever my career(s) turn out to be!

Strategic Communication + Digital and Social Media
For those interested in a career in digital marketing, a double major in Strategic Communication and Digital and Social Media is a great choice. There is currently a skills shortage of digital marketers, with demand for talent sitting at 59%, but with an active supply of only 19% (The Left Bank 2019). Furthermore, in the last two years, digital marketing hires grew by 32% (The Left Bank 2019).
With this unique double major, you'll learn extensive campaign development, advertising strategy and pitching skills alongside niche technical skills in digital marketing and social media. By the time you graduate, you'll have a portfolio of campaigns, strategies and digital products to show to your future employers.
I chose Public Communication (Advertising) and Digital and Social Media as my two majors because while having the traditional skills in communications is essential, pairing it with knowledge and skills for our modern and digital world is equally as important to keep up to date and relevant in all industries.
