Han’s vision: turning passion into a career at 10 News First

From classroom to newsroom: Han Nguyen’s path from studying at UTS to becoming a journalist at 10 News First highlights the impact of practical learning and the value of embracing every opportunity.

At UTS, students dive into practical experiences from the start. This immersive approach captivated Han and set her on her path. In her first semester, she tackled the Newsday assessment – a 24-hour real-world reporting challenge. Her first assignment? Covering Senate estimates in Canberra.

Determined to gain practical experience, Han embarked on many internships at UTS. A simple tweet to Mark Ferguson from 7News led to an invaluable internship opportunity, demonstrating her proactive nature and networking skills.  She worked with 9News, 10News First, The Sydney Morning Herald and 2GB radio in the press gallery.

“I loved the fact that I was being taught by real journalists who are in the industry and who have been through what I’m going through.”

Industry professional lectures at UTS provided Han with insights from seasoned journalists. Meeting Joe Hildebrand from The Daily Telegraph and Studio 10, Matt De Groot from NOVA96.9, and Jenni Ryall, former editor of Mashable, offered her a glimpse into the industry.

These connections helped her secure another internship with Studio 10, leading to roles with The Canberra Times and 7News Sydney before joining 10News First in Sydney.

Title page that says Han Ngyuen Journalism at UTS

Hi, I'm Han Yuen I'm currently studying communications here at UTS and I'm majoring in journalism.

I've always known I wanted to study at UTS. It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. The culture and the environment is something that appealed to me.

The fact that you're being taught by real journalists who had been in the industry for years it was so appealing because they teach you what they've learned in the field, so it made it so much easier for us as students to be real journalists.

It's such a hands-on and practical experience you're not just sitting at a desk; you're literally thrown into the deep on the first day and you're sent on a story out in the field.

I've done a few internships throughout my course, from 7 News, 9 News, few of the shows at Channel 10.

Most recently I completed a six-week placement at the Sydney Morning Herald and while I was there, I contributed to 40 editorial pieces, two front pages and one of my stories actually made the top news article of the day and that was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.

I still have a year left of my degree, but I'm not worried about not finding a job when I graduate because UTS has prepared me to be the journalist who I am and I feel like there is something out there for me.

Mastering the craft of journalism

Han’s UTS education equipped her with the essential skills for journalism – working to deadlines, fact-checking and writing for various media formats. But it was the hands-on elements of her course that prepared her for the industry.

Covering bushfires at Tathra, on the NSW South Coast, early in her career was a significant moment for Han. Reporting on such a critical event affirmed her commitment to journalism and the impact of telling people’s stories.

Han’s journey from UTS to 10News First is a powerful testament to the value of practical experience and the importance of seizing opportunities. Her story is an inspiration to aspiring journalists and a clear example of how UTS prepares its students for success.

“UTS gave me the skills, the foot in the door, and everything in between to get me to where I am today.”
