Participation in the UTS Startups community is entirely voluntary. However, if you choose not to participate, the university will be unable to provide the services referred to below.
Collecting and using your information
Your information will usually be collected directly from you. If you are under 16 years of age, you are required to obtain approval from your parent or legal guardian before providing your information to UTS. If you chose to participate in the UTS Startups community, UTS Startups will collect and manage your personal information for the following purposes:
UTS Startups and their team members: We collect information directly from participants involved in UTS Startups. Some of the information collected is personal information, including participant’s contact details, some demographic information, study and graduation details, skill strengths, and images. Other information is obtained from existing UTS systems where relevant. For example, information will be collected from the university’s student system to understand the educational pathways currently in use by startup founders at UTS. This information will be used to evaluate applications to join UTS Startups, to track progress of these startups, and to provide opportunities and connections to support team members. Information will also be used to track the effectiveness of, and to improve, the support, education and connections provided by UTS Startups and its team members. For example, UTS Startups may use your contact details to survey you or to follow up on missing information about you or your startup.
Events: We collect your contact information, and accessibility requirements if relevant, when you register for a UTS Startups. This information will be used to facilitate your attendance and to communicate with you about updates to the event.
Newsletters and keeping informed about UTS Startups activities: When you register for our newsletter or to receive updates from UTS Startups, the information collected will be used to maintain communication with you, including our activities and initiatives, events, jobs and startups news generally. You may register directly or by opting in when registering for an event.
We may use photography, screenshots and content from events (for example; general comments, ideas and statements that are shared) for future promotional use. Should you have any questions about this please contact us using the information below.
Storing your information and use of overseas service providers
The information we collect is stored on our behalf in a database hosted with Airtable, with parts of the data passed via Zapier. Both are hosted in the USA. For event and newsletter communications, we also use MailChimp to distribute the emails to you and to keep you in the loop with any updates regarding the event in question. Please refer to the separate Privacy Policies of Airtable, Zapier, Discord and MailChimp before applying to be part of UTS Startups, registering for an event or our newsletter.
UTS may also engage other contractors to undertake specific tasks involved with managing UTS Startups, including managing data quality or data visualisation and analytics.
Tracking the success of a UTS Startup and providing support to you may extend beyond your time as a student or staff member at UTS (if you are currently either). Your information will remain held for the purposes referred to in this privacy notice and in line with the university’s legal minimum records retention obligations.
Who receives your information
Information will be provided to our contracted service providers in support of our UTS Startups programs (see the above section).
To support the sharing of news and promotion of startups, the name of startups and founders is accessible on our website for the public to contact and engage with us in relation to a particular startup (for example, for the sharing of news and success stories). You can contact us if you do not wish your name to be included.

For example, UTS might provide information about your startup for research purposes to Australian or New South Wales government bodies or researchers within UTS or other universities. Where the information required includes personal information of team members, your separate consent will be obtained before identifiable information will be disclosed.
Making a request
You are able to make a request to access, correct, update or delete information held about you, or to make a complaint about how your information is being managed. You may also withdraw your consent to being part of UTS Startups, or withdraw your registration for an event, or a subscription to news from UTS Startups.
