Students admitted in the Master of Data Science and Innovation (MDSI) can take up to 24 credit points of unspecified elective subjects outside the elective subject list.

Requesting enrolment into another faculty’s subjects as electives

Some electives have prerequisites or access conditions. Students are not permitted to take an elective subject that covers substantially the same material as a required subject or a subject already undertaken.

How can I enrol in a subject offered by another faculty as an elective and get subject prerequisites waived?

If you wish to enrol in a subject offered by another faculty as an elective, you can apply via eRequest. Your eRequest for enrolment in elective subjects offered by another faculty will require the approval of the subject coordinator. The subject coordinator can waive the pre-requisites (admission or academic) listed in the access conditions of the subject, refer to UTS Handbook.

We strongly advise attaching your personal statement as part of your eRequest which may improve your chances of approval. Your personal statement should outline why you would like to take the subject, how will it benefit your core program and confirm that you have the knowledge and skills needed to meet the academic demands of the subject.

Students from Connected Intelligence Centre and TD School are not subject to these cross-faculty enrolment restrictions and may apply for cross-faculty electives at any time.

How can I search for a subject under my elective choice block?

If your course allows for free electives, you may choose any subject at the same level offered by UTS. This will require you to choose an undergraduate subject if you are studying for a bachelor degree or to choose a postgraduate subject if you are admitted into a master degree.

You can search the UTS Handbook and UTS timetable planner for subject options.

Electives MDSI students have taken in previous years

The following undergraduate and postgraduate sections show the subjects that MDSI students have previously taken as electives.

  • The offered column shows when the subject was offered previously. Please check the timetable planner to confirm the current semester offering for specific subjects.
  • In the eRequest column, ‘yes’ indicates subject enrolment is via eRequest and ‘no’ indicates you can enrol directly into the subject.
  • In the faculty column, ‘DAB’ is the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, ‘FASS’ is the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and ‘FEIT’ is the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.
