Graduate Diploma in Midwifery

Qualifies registered nurses to become professional midwives.

This course is not available to international students. 

Applications for 2025 Summer commencement will open in early June 2025. Students are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible, as late applications will only be considered if places are available.

An on-campus orientation day will be held in the first week of December 2025.

The subject 92384 Midwifery as Primary Healthcare: A public health strategy (3cp) will commence in December 2025 followed by 92385 Promoting, supporting and protecting breastfeeding (3cp).

Both subjects will be delivered via online modules and students will be expected to attend one (1) mandatory face-to-face workshop in mid to late late January 2026. 

Successful applicants must be available to attend the UTS campus for mandatory workshops in the first two (2) weeks of February 2026.

Limited commonwealth-supported places are available.

Midwives are valued members of the health care workforce, in high demand in both the public and private health systems.

The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery at UTS is a highly competitive course which qualifies registered nurses to be professional midwives through the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

This course meets standards of midwifery education and practice at both the national and international level.

What you’ll study

This course provides a broad theoretical and clinical study in midwifery, and includes a discussion of professional, sociopolitical and ethico-legal issues related to the family, and research skills that enhance midwifery practice and interpersonal processes. 

You will undertake concurrent employment as a midwifery student in an accredited midwifery unit.

You will need to complete a total of 48 credit points, comprising nine compulsory subjects.
