  This course is designed for health professionals seeking to specialise in diabetes education and management across various settings. This course offers a collaborative learning environment, featuring direct engagement with experienced academics and clinicians from leading hospitals, diabetes centres and primary health clinics.

  Distinctive for its comprehensive exploration of diabetes from scientific and behavioural standpoints, the course equips you with a deep understanding of diabetes aetiology, pathophysiology, and the principles of self-management care models.

  You will acquire knowledge and practical skills to prevent and manage diabetes effectively, enhancing your professional competency. Learning occurs through interactive sessions with experts, fostering a dynamic educational experience.

  Students have strong involvement with academics and clinicians from major teaching hospitals and diabetes centres.

  The course approaches diabetes education and management from scientific, aetiology and pathophysiological perspectives as well as exploring theories of health behaviour and the implications these have for practice. Students examine the systems in place to prevent and manage diabetes with an emphasis on the self-management model of care.

  The course is offered on a one-year, part-time basis. It is offered fully online with the exception of a 40-hour clinical placement in Spring semester requiring a face-to-face attendance at a diabetes service.

• Admission requirements arrow_forward_ios

  To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  Applicants must have one of the following:

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in a field of study related to health, such as nursing, allied health, or medicine AND Current registration in Australia for one of the following: Registered Nurse (RN or Division One), Registered Midwife, Accredited Practising Dietitian, Registered Medical Practitioner, Registered Pharmacist, Registered Podiatrist, Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Registered Physiotherapist, Registered Psychologist, Aboriginal Health Practitioner, Optometrist AND Professional experience in a health-related discipline

  OR

  • Completed Australian bachelor's degree, or overseas equivalent, in a health-related field AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of hospital training or college certificates

  OR

  • Completed approved hospital training or college certificate AND Recent relevant professional experience AND A general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of hospital training or college certificates

  Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application

  For applicants who need to demonstrate work experience:

  • Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of Service in one of the following formats:
    • A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
    • A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
    • A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only)
    • An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
    • A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)

  2025 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students

  This course offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. If eligible, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP, or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.  

  CSP applications are reviewed continuously by the university and offered based on merit, so we recommend applying early to be considered. Learn more about applying for a CSP, eligibility and key dates.

  2025 Tuition Fees

  • Indicative first-year tuition fee: $4,627.00
  • Indicative Total tuition fee: $4,627.00

  Tuition fees are reviewed annually, with any new rates effective from the beginning of each calendar year. The total indicative tuition fee includes estimated annual increases over the duration of the course.

  Additional Costs 

  Your tuition fees do not include:

  • The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
  • Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
  • Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).

  • The indicative tuition fees above are based on full-time study (1 year = 48 credit points).
  • Your actual fees depend on the year you enrol, your study load and the subjects you choose. Some subjects fall into different student contribution bands.

• Professional recognition arrow_forward_ios

  Practitioners from the disciplines listed below are eligible to proceed with the credentialling process through the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) to gain authorisation as a credentialled diabetes educator once they have completed this accredited course (a compulsory prerequisite of the credentialling process). Eligible disciplines include: registered nurses (RN or division one); accredited practising dieticians; registered medical practitioners; registered pharmacists; podiatrists; accredited exercise physiologists; physiotherapists; and registered midwives.
