Information for STEM professionals
This 8-week (term-long), in-class program integrates project-based learning activities into the curriculum with teachers and continues the learning with families at home. STEM professionals are invited to visit our partner schools, commencing in February.
The role of STEM professionals
- A project mentor - Students will be designing, developing and prototyping solutions to defined problems relevant to their science units of work. STEM professionals can provide valuable guidance along with UTS students to keep students on the right track and inspire curiosity.
- A knowledge bank - Knowledge of your field, industry and business activity can help to bring STEM to life in the classroom. You could share with students how technology is changing the way you work, or how scientific discovery is helping people and the environment.
- A role model - What does a STEM professional look like? We know there is not just one type of STEM professional. You can be a role model for students by sharing your authentic self and giving them an opportunity to create their own identity as a STEM professional.

How will the program’s impact evaluated?
UTS has a commitment to creating positive sustainable social impact. The effectiveness of this program will be evaluated using several tools including surveys, interviews and self-reflection. We will be measuring the following expected outcomes:
- Increased interest in STEM subjects in the classroom
- Increased interest in STEM play at home
- Increased confidence in STEM skills
- Improved ability in STEM subjects
- Increased teacher confidence in integrating STEM technologies in the Science curriculum
- Increased family involvement in STEM learning
- Changes in perceptions of gender roles of students and families
How much time do I need to commit to the program?
For students to identify STEM professionals as role models, they need to build trust and rapport. We advise attending the program for at least 2 sessions over the 8 weeks.
What is defined as a STEM professional?
A STEM professional is anyone who works or has worked with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths as a core part of their job or in STEM organisations. We are interested in professionals from a wide range of industries to show the breadth of opportunities in STEM.
Do I have to know anything about the topic?
The unit of work in the Science curriculum will vary from term to term. Some units may be more relevant than others so by finding out more about you, we aim to match you to the best school.
What will I gain from participating in the program?
- Skilled volunteering is proven to increase job satisfaction and allows professionals to apply skills in new ways, outside of the scope of their job
- The opportunity to engage with young creative minds
- The opportunity to shape gender perceptions of girls and boys at a young age
Does my company need to sign up as well?
Individuals are welcome to sign up however we encourage professionals to advise their company of their involvement. Perhaps your colleagues might be interested too!
