Meet Jing Ying
Originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Jing Ying worked in Singapore after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce. Having already attended university in Melbourne, she returned to Australia to pursue a Master’s degree but this time in sunny Sydney.
“UTS had a strong focus on supporting students with employment which was a critical factor for me. I also liked the variety and coverage of electives offered under the business information systems major as it provided a good balance of education in business and technology. If I had to choose one thing I enjoyed the most about UTS, it would be the people—my peers, the lecturers, and staff.”
Jing Ying joined the Lucy Mentoring Program to prepare herself for a career in tech. The program connects women studying engineering or technology at UTS to industry professionals for one-on-one mentoring to build career confidence, industry networks and access to role models. The program also gave Jing Ying the opportunity to establish relationships with other young, ambitious women, and learn about the technology industry and its endless professions.
The intention of the program is not to secure employment, but I was able to make an impression which paved my path forward. Through the Lucy Mentoring Program, I met my mentor who was a Director from PwC. Months after applying for an internship with PwC, I was approached by Human Capital—who I interacted with during my time in the mentoring program. They offered me a position as a Technology Consulting Intern. Five months into the internship, I was offered a fulltime role as a Consultant in the Graduate Program.
In 2022, Jing Ying is now a Manager at PwC Australia. As part of the consulting arm, her role and responsibilities often change depending on the project.
“Currently, I am a Test Lead which encompasses a variety of tasks within the testing lifecycle e.g. scripting, test execution, retest, etc. I also support the test team and delivery lead with coordination and management of deliverables to ensure that we meet milestones as well as drive initiatives to improve the testing process with the broader team. Six months from now, my job duties can be very different!”
