The Third Space explores the Australian-Chinese experience that is neither purely one, nor the other, existing in a third space that is dynamic and nuanced. The collection is a personal journey and reflection on Yu’s own family’s migration from China to Australia that has resulted in the birth of a hybrid identity. This experience is explored through deconstructed, displaced garments with integrated sportswear detailing. These act as building blocks, symbolic of the multilayered individuality of immigrant identities. Printed textiles are manipulated and distorted to create tension through contrasting materiality and textures. The Third Space is a place where cultural identity is not only celebrated, but reclaimed, empowering the voices that are often unheard.
