Orientalism denies a nuanced understanding of Chinese and Hong Kong culture. Rachel Song’s collection responds to this by bringing the Hong Kong vernacular into a fashion space and provides an alternate voice in the Eurocentric fashion industry. Song’s evolving design practice is strongly informed by her own experiences, based on a respect and engagement with her own cultural roots. From colour symbolism to indigenous materials, this collection creates a meaningful conversation through clothing and brings forth a contemporary Chinese femininity that explores Hong Kong identity.
