Between is a story I wrote whilst on exchange in England for a class on nature writing. It is about a dead young woman learning to love herself after death, not through the healing of the body, or the absence of pain, but by seeing herself as beautiful; for how can she regard nature as beautiful and not herself if they reflect each other and become each other’s home? There is a flower for every shade your skin might turn, and the wild is so full of colour and character, then when we are part of it, with all our scars and bruises and freckles and tattoos and what have you, we belong wholly in the picture.
