Inherent requirements are the essential academic (theory) and clinical capabilities, knowledge and skills required to achieve the core learning outcomes of the Bachelor of Nursing (BN). These are outlined in the BN Inherent Requirements Statement and you must read this to ensure you meet them.
After reading the Inherent Requirements Statement, you need to carefully consider whether you might experience challenges in meeting any of the inherent requirements needed to successfully complete the BN. Each session, you will be required to sign a UTS Inherent Requirement Declaration Form and the Clinical Practice Unit will notify you by email when this is required. By signing the form, you confirm that you have read and understood the requirements.
The six inherent requirements are
- Legal and Behavioural requirements
- Communication Tasks: Verbal, Written, Non-Verbal
- Cognitive Tasks: Literacy, Knowledge and Information
- Sensory Tasks: Visual, Auditory, Tactile
- Physical Tasks: Gross Motor Tasks, Fine Motor Tasks
- Sustainable Performance
When you go on your clinical placement, you will be expected to engage in the same situations and tasks that a Registered Nurse does. Some will need specific physical, mental skills and abilities.
You might need to:
- Control your emotions in emergency situations or during patient suffering
- Undertake calculations to administer drugs correctly
- Take action quickly and follow instructions for patient care
- Engage in physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, transferring, pushing, pulling standing, twisting, bending, and moving in restricted spaces.
- Be proficient in English to speak clearly with patients and staff
