This National Science Week, UTS Women in Engineering and IT is collaborating with Techgirls Movement Foundation and Engineers Without Borders to engage girls in regional and remote areas through a social media campaign and STEM Design Challenge. Learn how you can get involved!

Design Challenge Create for your community 20 & 21 August 2020

National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

STEM Design Challenge

The STEM Design Challenge is one of these events, and is a collaboration between UTS Women In Engineering & IT, the Techgirls Movement Foundation and Engineers Without Borders Australia. Whilst the challenge is open to all students, the initiative aims to inspire girls and Indigenous students aged 10 to 14 from rural NSW to immerse in a project and explore the joys and rewards of engaging in STEM learning, during a two-day, in-class challenge that is mapped to the curriculum.

On 20 & 21 August, classes from Stage 3 and 4 joined our virtual classroom to design, create and build solutions to problems in their community - using technology, engineering, science and maths.

#mySTEMstory campaign

To support the promotion of regional girls in STEM and the design challenge, we want to capture and share the stories of women and Indigenous peoples who grew up in regional and remote communities and are now working in the STEM field!

Through this project, we aim to introduce role models to these students, to show them what is possible, let them know that they can dream big, and to share the myriad of possibilities in the STEM disciplines.

Join the campaign by capturing your story on video and sharing it with us! Find out more

Acknowledgement of Country

UTS acknowledges the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation and the Boorooberongal People of the Dharug Nation upon whose ancestral lands our campuses now stand. We would also like to pay respect to the Elders both past and present, acknowledging them as the traditional custodians of knowledge for these lands.
