Building Houses for Underprivileged Families in Cambodia

Construction is a global industry and impacts our lives in so many ways and at so many levels. It is a precious opportunity to be able to contribute to the lives of underprivileged families in other countries through building real projects. This elective subject enables students to travel overseas and participate in an organised project to construct a house for the local community of a developing country. In 2018 the destination was the Island of Koh Ramdual, approximately 1 hour drive from Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The build projects were organised and run in conjunction with a local not-for-profit, Side by Side, with all materials and tools used on this build donated by our outstanding sponsors, HD Projects. HD Projects is the longest standing permanent formwork systems contractor in the Australia. Students prepare for the construction project and living in a developing community by participating in three special workshops. The project involves travel to Cambodia for a week, where students participate in the building of several houses for underprivileged families and get to engage with and exchange with the local culture.
