A focus on technical skills and real world facilities convinced Jing to study IT at UTS.

For Jing-Ying, the course content has lived up to her expectations including access to great facilities.
"I particularly enjoyed getting hands-on in the subject LANS and Routing where I had to work with cables, routers and switches which was complementary to the theory".
In addition, she also appreciated UTS's culture where change is constant, including the relevance of subjects and breadth of electives offered. Overall, she found the content and subjects relatively current to market demands and applicable. But some of the most valuable things she’s learnt have happened outside the classroom.
"I participated in the Accomplish Award, which helped to increase my employability. I attended mock interviews, strengthened my CV, and built my personal brands and networks. I also attended a myriad of networking events organised by the university which was a great avenue to find out more about organisations, connect with professionals and learn about industries."
I joined the Lucy Mentoring Program, which exposes women to employment and leadership opportunities, where I was paired with an IT professional at PwC. The experience was the starting point for a wealth of professional relationships. The mentor had his own team in IT architecture, so it was really great getting to know what the different team members do, and getting an overview of how all the different units fit together,” Little did she know she'd be heading back for an internship upon graduation.
Since then, Jing-Ying has been able to apply her learnings, knowledge and transferable skills to real-world problems across multiple projects. This include project management, requirements gathering and assessing the cloud infrastructure landscape.
"It can be something as fundamental as knowing what UX is, design thinking, IoT, cloud, or working in different teams with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. I found that what you do over the course compared to working in the 'real world' is wildly different due to the nature of the environments however, I found that UTS provided a sound basis and foundation on which I can build my skills on in a professional capacity."
