Midwifery is a career that is demanding, absorbing – and hugely rewarding.
What are your current duties?
As a group practice midwife, I care for 40 women a year. I stand by mothers from booking into the hospital, throughout the pregnancy, birth and postnatal period. I regularly have visits with the women which are either at the hospital, in their home or in the community. I work quite autonomously within a close-knit group of four midwives.
What's the average day likes as a Group Practice Midwife?
No one day is the same because I’m on call for the women I care for. If someone comes into labour, all else planned for that day is postponed or one of the other midwives in the group helps out. It’s all very exciting!
What do you like best about your job?
Group practice is a woman-centred model of care where the midwife develops a strong relationship with the women in her care, and a lot of trust naturally develops. I love this!
What would you tell students thinking of choosing this career path?
Go for it! Midwifery is a career that is demanding, absorbing – and hugely rewarding.
