Be prepared to find new areas of interest and venture down paths you won't expect to explore.
At the end of the degree I felt job ready. By the time I went for my interview my brain was flooded with skills and knowledge and I felt competent and confident.
Before starting at UTS: I grew up in Sydney and went to Ravenswood School for Girls in Gordon. From there I studied Business at UTS, before working for seventeen years in Financial Services. My passion for midwifery started when I was a little girl and that flame continued to burn brightly regardless of how much I loved my jobs in Financial Services or my job as a Mum. I finally made the move to UTS in 2012 and I’ve just completed my Bachelor of Midwifery degree. It’s one of the best moves I’ve ever made.
I was motivated to study this degree I’ve always wanted to be a midwife – I have a keen interest in babies and women’s health.
I chose UTS because it was the only university that offers this sort of direct-entry midwifery course.
The most rewarding aspect of the course: There are so many aspects that were rewarding! The intellectual stimulation of learning new knowledge; the extensive practical component (gaining invaluable experience in hospitals); the lab work in the faculty’s excellent facilities; the assignments, which were relevant and interesting; the gaining of “real skills” that will make a difference and finally, reaching the end of the degree and feeling job ready!
The advice I would give to students studying the degree is to approach your studies with an open mind. Be prepared to find new areas of interest and go down a different route than you otherwise may have expected. These are exciting times!
After completing my degree I will start working in a graduate role at a hospital. When I started my Bachelor of Midwifery, I had a hospital and a job in mind as my dream job for when I finished. This is the job I got. By the time I went for my interview my brain was flooded with skills and knowledge and I felt competent and confident. Spending the last four years at UTS in such a dynamic academic environment has re-ignited my thirst for knowledge. I am contemplating Masters in 2017. Clearly I can't get enough of UTS!
