The UTS Engineering program gives you the flexibility to specialise in an engineering major, or choose the flexible engineering major that allows you to choose complementary subjects from multiple majors. You also graduate with 12 months of work experience through the Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice.
To help you on your way, we've covered the top questions from across the year.
Do I have to be a mathematical genius to study engineering?
It’s true that a good level of mathematics is needed but you definitely don’t need to be a maths genius. All first-year engineering students complete a maths exam to assess if you need extra maths support, on top of the core maths subjects that all first-year engineering students take. Support is provided through additional maths classes as well as peer-to-peer support. These programs are available to all students throughout their degree.
What is the flexible engineering major?
The flexible engineering major is suited to students who aren’t sure what major they’d like to specialise in. You can enrol in the flexible engineering major, complete core engineering subjects in first year then decide which major to transfer to, or perhaps you could choose a mix of majors which complement each other. This can be discussed with your course coordinator.
What happens if I don’t get the Selection Rank?
Your ATAR isn’t the only determining factor to entry into UTS. There are additional adjustment factors given to students who complete relevant HSC subjects. This scheme can add up to five additional bonus points.
You can also complete the Engineering and IT Portfolio (Year 12) to demonstrate your strong motivation to study engineering and IT. If you fall short of the Selection Rank by 1–3 points, we will still consider your application.
There are other options.
Is there another engineering major with a lower selection rank that you are eligible for? Once all first-year core subjects are completed, you can apply to transfer to another major. Transfers will be considered if you have achieved the minimum grade point average.
TAFE NSW and UTS College are also pathway options which you can take to get to UTS.
What is the Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice?
The Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice (DPEP) is a 2 x 6-month internship program that all domestic engineering students must complete. This internship program gives you a year of work experience to apply what you learned at uni, as well as giving you a competitive edge for roles when you graduate.
We have also covered the top questions relating to the Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice.
How can I apply for an internship?
UTS industry partners post internship opportunities on CareerHub, the UTS job board. Other students use SEEK or similar job boards to source their own employment. Once you have found a position then you register the internship on CareerHub. If you are currently working in a role that meets the requirements of the internship, then you can register the internship on CareerHub.
The internship is supported by subjects to ensure your CV and interview skills are up to speed, and you have the important interpersonal skills to excel in a work environment.
Can I change my mind and move to another major/degree?
Yes. If you change your mind, you can apply for a course transfer within UTS. You will receive credit for completed subjects that are shared between courses and start in your new program in the next available session.
How can I get international experience?
UTS has exchange agreements with more than 185 universities in over 39 countries. You can complete a session or two of your engineering degree overseas as part of the Global Exchange program and get credit towards your UTS degree.
You can also combine your degree with international studies. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, gives you an opportunity to learn a language and culture in country for one year.
You can also engage with Beyond UTS International Leadership Development (BUILD) as a volunteer. Opportunities include overseas travel to participate in global conferences, internships, community volunteer projects and short-term study programs.
