Our research
Automated sheep counting in the live export industry
Our researchers have partnered with Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and Livecorp in Australia’s first project applying video-based automated sheep counting technology for livestock export. The system can also be used to monitor animal welfare. A prototype had been developed and tested successfully with end-users, and the technology will be transferred to MLA in March 2020 as the next stage in its commercialisation.

Deep learning-based fish species recognition, size estimation and freshness measurement

Partnering with Sydney Fish Market in the Fish Provenance and Quality Tracking System project, we’re applying our image processing technology to automated fish size measurement, fish species classification and freshness identification. In an Australian first, the project aims to develop a model that utilises AI-based image processing technology for auto-measurement of fish freshness in the market’s process lines.
Thermal image-based pedestrian detection in a mining environment
A collaboration between our researchers and Nautitech Mining Systems is developing core technology for thermal image-based pedestrian detection in underground mining environments. Our software, embedded in the company’s thermal camera technology on mining trucks, instantly alerts drivers in the event of a miner in truck’s path, dramatically aiding driver vision under conditions of low lighting and high dust levels. The technology was successfully transferred to Nautitech, and the prototype featured at the 2017 Asia-Pacific International Mining Exhibition (AIMEX) in Sydney.
