Continuing Professional Education for Stuttering (CPES)

The Lidcombe Program is an evidence-based behavioural treatment for early stuttering in children.

The treatment is administered to children by parents under the supervision of a clinician. There are two Stages in the Lidcombe Program. During Stage 1, the child achieves no stuttering or almost no stuttering. During Stage 2, the child maintains that achievement for a long period. The treatment in the Lidcombe Program involves parent verbal contingencies, used during everyday conversations. Clinical measurement of stuttering is critical in the Lidcombe Program because it is a focus of all management decisions and the focus of all communication about stuttering between the clinician, parent, and child.

The Lidcombe Program Workshop is designed for speech pathologists who are interested in using the Lidcombe Program. The workshop will include short presentations, small- and large-group activities, viewing and discussion of treatment videos, and case discussions.

Learning outcomes for participants include

• understanding the rationale and concepts of the Lidcombe Program
• the ability to confidently conduct the components of the Lidcombe Program.

Registration is open to all qualified speech pathologists. Some experience with treating stuttering in pre-school-age children is advisable. It will be assumed that you are familiar with the Lidcombe Program. Students who are completing the final semester of their professional degree program are welcome to attend.

This workshop is designed for speech pathologists to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to assist school-age children who stutter. The information in the workshop is presented by speech pathologists who specialise in stuttering treatment.

The workshop begins with an overview of the characteristics of stuttering in school age children, measurement of stuttering, and initial assessment. Overarching principles to guide clinical practice with this client group are introduced. Evidence-based stuttering treatments are described, and common issues discussed. 

Participants learn through discussion and role-play, through video demonstration and by hearing from all key stakeholders including children who stutter, their parents, speech pathologists and psychologists. 

Learning outcomes for participants include

• understanding the general characteristics of stuttering in school-age children

• assessing and measuring stuttering in this population

• gaining an understanding of the role of the speech pathologist when working with this population

• describing the evidence for, and having an understanding of, treatments that may be used 

• gaining experience in problem solving some of the clinical issues encountered.

The Camperdown Program is a treatment for adults and adolescents who stutter. The aim of the program is for clients to learn a speech technique to help them control their stuttering in situations of their choosing.

The Camperdown Program is most often implemented during weekly consultations with a speech pathologist, in the clinic or via telepractice; however, it can also be implemented in a group or intensive format. While the workshop will focus on individual weekly treatment, other formats will be discussed.

This Camperdown Program workshop has been revised to reflect the new terminology and procedures outlined in the 2024 Camperdown Treatment guide. It is designed for speech pathologists who are interested in using the program to treat adults or adolescents who stutter. It integrates some theory and research evidence, where relevant, for understanding program concepts. However, the workshop will be practical-based with a focus on the skills needed to implement the various stages of the program. The workshop includes short presentations, small- and large-group practical activities, viewing and discussion of treatment videos, and problem-solving activities.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the participant will be able to

• understand the context and evidence for the Camperdown Program
• understand the concepts and components of the Camperdown Program
• confidently implement the components of the Camperdown Program
• understand and teach client problem-solving strategies.
