Sport and social issues
Policy goals and community aspirations
Around the world, the social and cultural significance of sport is advocated by governments, sport associations, NGOs and community groups. The theme ‘Sport and Social Issues’ provides a multi-disciplinary focal point for researchers who aim to investigate how sport intersects with policy goals and community aspirations, as well as with local experiences. Historically, sport has long been a site of discrimination and marginalisation in areas like disability, ‘race’, ethnicity, and gender, but a key goal of contemporary sport is inclusivity and multiculturalism. Sport has also emerged as a site for wider development goals, such as conflict resolution, with physical activity a vehicle towards their pursuit.
