Climate Change Cluster Seminar Series, 2024
The global climate is experiencing unprecedented change, which threatens the sustainability of natural ecosystems and the human populations that rely on them. The Climate Change Cluster Seminar series showcases cutting-edge climate adaption and mitigation solutions from our collaborators, industry partners and other leading academics worldwide.
These seminars are especially pertinent for students and researchers keen on staying abreast of contemporary scientific developments in the climate change sector, offering a valuable chance for networking and fostering fresh perspectives on addressing the significant environmental, social and economic challenges associated with our changing climate. Since the start of 2024, four researchers visited UTS to discuss their research. To learn more about their research topics, explore the drop-down menus below.
Prof. Muhammad Aamer Mehmood
Distinguished Professor of Biotechnology, Government College University Faisalabad, Pakistan
Title: "Algae-based CO2 capture and biotransformation of biomass to bioproducts in a circular bioeconomy paradigm"
In an era where environmental issues are front and centre, finding sustainable answers is of utmost importance. Professor Mehmood, a renowned biotechnology expert, kicked off the 2024 C3 Seminar Series with a compelling talk this January. He showcased the groundbreaking use of algae in wastewater treatment, recycling, and enhancing soil quality. His deep dive into algae farming illuminated its potential to tackle urgent environmental challenges and pave the way for a greener future.
Dr. Dana Hunt
Associate Professor of Microbial Ecology, Duke University, USA
Title: "Microbes as sentinels of changing oceans"
In the C3 seminar held in February, Dr. Hunt explored the impact of environmental elements, such as temperature fluctuations and hurricanes, on marine microbial communities. Drawing from research at the Pivers Island Coastal Observatory, she combined long-term data with frequent post-disturbance observations to track microbiome changes. Moreover, the audience gained insights into her pioneering work on developing a synthetic microbial community, which promises to deepen our understanding of environmental changes and the interactions among marine microorganisms.
Prof. David J Suggett
Professor of Marine Biology, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, KSA
Title: "Transforming at scale restoration via industry 4.0 to aid ecological recovery of coral reefs"
In March, Prof. Suggett presented his groundbreaking research on the KAUST Reefscape Restoration Initiative to the C3 audience. Prof. Suggett underscored the initiative's 'systems'-based strategy, which integrates both in situ and ex-situ nurseries, automated workflows, and cutting-edge transport solutions capable of deploying thousands of corals daily. He also emphasized the pivotal role of a robust research and development portfolio, encompassing AI and materials science, to overcome unique regional challenges and drive socio-economic advancements alongside ecological restoration.
Dr. Sara Hamzelou
Postdoctoral Fellow, CSIRO Health and Biosecurity, Australia
Title: "Novel algal sources of highly digestible protein with functional health benefit"
In the April seminar, Dr. Hamzelou discussed the promise of microalgae as a protein-rich food source, emphasizing that only a few species are currently well-understood and suitable for consumption due to specific compositional and sensory constraints. Attendees were introduced to a research project evaluating various microalgae species from the Australian National Algae Culture Collection.
This ongoing initiative aims to pinpoint species with high-quality protein content and potential bioactive compounds, aiming to improve metabolic and gut health. This research addresses critical hurdles in advancing sustainable food production.
Seminars at C3 are held monthly. The following researchers will be joining us over the next quarter to discuss their research.
Dr. Branka Miljevic (May)
Talk title: Southern Ocean aerosols: where we are and where we are going to
Dr. Alison Turnbull (June)
Talk title: Preparing for climate change impacts on seafood food safety
Prof. Dr. Florence Elias (July)
Talk title: Marine foam: capture of phytoplankton in foam
