Research impact Orchestrating openness in industrial data ecosystems for advanced manufacturing
To build sustainable supply chains and boost innovation and competitiveness in industrial data ecosystems, we need to incentivise openness. This project involves the first national advanced manufacturing survey to uncover how to best achieve this goal.
The challenge
In Australia, manufacturing has been steadily declining over the last 30 years, ranking only 21st in global competitiveness. The industrial Internet of Things, a key disruptive technology, can help manufacturers address this challenge. It connects smart objects, networks and platforms to collect, share, and analyse real-time data across ‘industrial data ecosystems’. This enables asset tracking, predictive maintenance, agile production, supply chain optimisation and resilience – needs laid bare by COVID-19. With manufacturers sceptical about data sharing, this research aims to explore how to incentivise openness in industrial data ecosystems; with insights aiming to build sustainable supply chains and boost innovation and competitiveness.
Solution
The research team will conduct the first national advanced manufacturing survey and, together with complementary qualitative interviews, will address two interrelated knowledge gaps: How can industrial data ecosystems be orchestrated to co-align value creation and capture for all stakeholders? What is an optimal ecosystem design to incentivise openness and data sharing in industrial data ecosystems?
Outcome and impact
By developing an integrated model of governance mechanisms to facilitate openness and data sharing in industrial data ecosystems, this project will accelerate innovation in the manufacturing sector – and consequently improve outcomes for industry and society.
