Wht I enjoy about the course is the practical component and the great friends that I have made.
Before starting the course I was a stay at home mum for 12 years, doing family day care so that I could be with my young family. I also worked as a childbirth support person. Before that, I worked in tourism, managing a backpackers lodge in remote NZ during the summer and working on ski fields during the winter.
I was motivated to study this course because I suddenly decided what I wanted to be when I grew up! I wanted to return to the workforce, but having young children, tourism wasn't an option. I had great birth experiences, so wanted to share my knowledge and experiences with others.
I chose UTS because it is the only university in NSW offering the 3 year direct entry Bachelor of Midwifery.
Studying at UTS is a great experience. I feel well supported by my tutors and my peers. The facilities that we study in are new and the equipment that we use is up-to-date with current technology. There are so many support services offered by UTS, from HELPS, medical clinics, and bookshops through to food halls and the library.
The thing I enjoy most about the course is the prac component. That and the great friends that I have made!
The advice I would give to students studying this degree it that it is hard!! There is no getting away from that. You really do have to give it 100%. There is more to this degree than just going to uni and churning out assignments. But, go for it!
When I complete my degree I would love to work in a continuity of care model and after a couple of years continue my study by doing the Child and Family Health course.
