With various starting points during the year, stream choices and electives, the Executive MBA provides you with a lot of flexibility.
Plan your study
Most subjects in the Executive MBA are scheduled in short teaching periods (S1 = January/February, S2 = March/April, etc.), and only some are scheduled during the main teaching periods (Autumn, Spring and Summer)
- Short-reaching periods are six weeks long and are used for intensive in-class, online and block-mode delivery.
- Main teaching periods are 12 weeks long and allow time for research and project work required for the Strategic Design Studio and the capstone subjects Venture Launch and Transformation and Renewal.
Rules to work with
Here are some guidelines on how to plan your study.
- Enrol in at least one of the six online core subjects for every short session (S1-S6) until you have completed them all
- Enrol in at least one stream subject of your choice for every short session (S1-S6)
- Take the Adaptive Leadership Lab early
- Take the Strategic Design Studio ideally after you have completed at least 18cp
- Add your choice of elective "options" subjects when you have the capacity for it
- Take the capstone subjects after you completed a min of 24cp
I needed a different way of thinking, and I knew the UTS Executive MBA would offer that.

How do you want to study?
You can study the EMBA in one year or take more time. It’s up to you and how much time you have to study. We schedule subjects, so you have a good balance of core subjects, stream subjects and electives available every session. To take the electives you want, look for when they are offered and make sure you can fit them in.
Here are some suggestions and answers to some typical ways of studying the EMBA.
I want to finish the degree in one year
In this case, you should commence in S2 (March) or S4 (July) and take about 12cp worth of subjects every short session (S1-S6) to ensure you can complete 72cp over 12 months. Check out the recommended full-time study path below for S2 and S4 intakes.
I plan more than one year to complete the degree
In this case, we recommend you take a mix of core online subjects and stream subjects first. E.g., you may choose any 3cp core online subjects offered and add a 3cp or 6cp stream subject of your choice. A part-time study load is about 6cp per short session (S1-S6). This way, you stretch the degree completion over 24 months or more. If you have additional capacity, you can always add any other core, stream or elective subjects as you see fit or have time for study.
I want to start as soon as possible
In this case, we recommend you start with a mix of core subjects and at least one stream subject. This way you get to know the cohort and teaching team while covering some core knowledge areas.
I want to graduate with an Executive MBA in Entrepreneurship
To graduate with the EMBA in Entrepreneurship, you must complete all Entrepreneurship stream subjects. We recommend you take one at a time. Ideally, you can take the Venture Lab before you enrol into Venture Launch, but apart from that, no particular sequence is recommended.
I want to combine subjects from various streams
No problem. You can choose a combination of stream subjects to build your experience. Overall, you need 24cp from stream subjects which must include a 6cp Lab subject and a 6cp capstone subject. If you want to graduate with an Executive MBA in Entrepreneurship, you must complete all Entrepreneurship stream subjects. You can also choose stream subjects as electives.
I am not sure yet how long I will take or what stream I am interested in
In this case, we recommend you start exploring subjects on offer at the time of your enrolment. As you complete more subjects, it will become clearer which topics are most relevant and exciting for you. You will also get to know your learning style so you can decide what balance of work and study suits your lifestyle. If you follow the basic rules mentioned above, you won’t miss out on any options. We are also available to help should you wish to discuss your next steps.
