Title: Utilization of laboratory scale flat-panel photobioreactors in microalgal biotechnology

Microalgae have gained increased attention as ideal candidates for biotechnological applications due to their capacity to produce valuable molecules ranging from therapeutic proteins to biofuels. In this talk, a new approach to fast and reliable characterization and optimization of microalgal growth in a flat-panel photobioreactors will be presented. As a case study of bio-production optimization, production of ethylene by recombinant cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 will be described. The possibilities of using photobioreactors for photosynthesis research will be discussed.

Tomas Zavrel
I graduated in plant physiology at Masaryk University in Brno, CZ. During the Ph.D. program I was affiliated with the same department but most of the time I was working in Laboratory of Adaptive Biotechnologies (Global Change Research Institute, CAS, CZ) which was closely cooperating with engineering company Photon System Instruments (Brno, CZ). There I had a unique opportunity to study in detail stress physiology, biochemistry and biotechnological potential of selected cyanobacterial species as well as to participate in development of state of the art cultivation and analytical instruments. Currently I continue working in the same laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher.
