How to set up the perfect study space
Many UTS students now have a mix of face-to-face and online classes. To make the most out of your virtual classes, study from home and online exams, it is essential to have a space where you can function efficiently.
Student experience story by Sally Walker
As a law student, some of my key tips to making a perfect study space include:
- Clean and clear! To prepare your mind to study, free your study area from clutter and mess. Your desk should only have what you need, you don’t need to accessorise when studying so put everything away that isn’t essential.
- Peace and quiet! Try to pick somewhere that is quiet - as quiet as you can find at home. Alternatively, invest into a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones or utilise instrumental study playlists on Spotify to minimise distraction.
- Get out of your room! If possible, choose a desk or table that is out of your bedroom or not facing your bed. It can be tempting to have a nap or just relax in your room when it’s in front of you. Being away from things that might steal your attention from study is best – that also means put that phone away (yes you can do it!).
- Ergonomics! Make sure you have a good posture and a comfortable chair that does not cause discomfort. Additionally, the correct computer positioning and blue-light blocking settings (when studying into the night) are essential for the longevity of your study session.
- Study smart, not hard! Set achievable goals and reward yourself when your complete the task. For example, review a lecture and take a five minute break.
- Keep moving! A balance between study and the rest of your day is key. Remember to regularly stretch and exercise some point during the day. Even if you’re not up to it, a light walk around the block can work wonders for focus and productivity.
Remember you can always head to the UTS Library or to an on-campus study space, some variety in location can keep things fresh. Fortunately, UTS has sorted the lightning, seating and resources for you, so all you have to do is bring yourself – happy studying!
